Second City Responds To Jason Sudeikis Punching Baby Yoda In The Mandalorian Season Finale

The Mandalorian is currently enjoying the high praise it has received from both critics and audiences alike. Sitting at 94% from critics and 93% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, some have called it the best addition to the Star Wars franchise since The Force Awakens and even the original trilogy. Greenlit for a second season that is due to be released in Fall 2020fans are already anticipating where the story will take its protagonist and his Baby Yoda companion after the events of the epic season finale. Directed by Taika Waititi, the final episode for season one delivered on all levels, including an opening that was rich with creator Jon Favreau’s comedic roots.

In the opening minutes, Baby Yoda is in the hands of two bike scout stormtroopers who are waiting to be given their orders. The scene features a banter between the two with moments of one trooper punching the bag Baby Yoda is held in. There is also a fantastic moment in the scene that pokes fun at the long-running joke that stormtroopers can never hit a target. Shortly after the release of the episode, news hit that the two troopers were played by Jason Sudeikis (Hall PassHorrible BossesSaturday Night Live) and Adam Pally (Iron Man 3Dirty Grandpa), with Sudeikis being the one doing the punching. Shortly after the news hit, a satirical statement was released by Second City, Chicago’s legendary sketch comedy and improv theatre that gave many comedy stars their start–including Sudeikis:

It was nice to see Favreau, who originates from comedies like PCU and Swingers, sneak some comedy not only into this episode, but at different points of the series without steering off course from the story’s main plot. Moreover, he even added friends like Sudeikis and Bill Burr to the show, two people one would never expect to see in a Star Wars story. The actor-turned-writer/director/producer responsible for creating a Christmas classic (Elf) and starting the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Iron Man, as well as producing numerous other installments) is now the mastermind behind a Star Wars chapter that is a massive hit, at a time when the fanbase finds itself split on the recent films.

In Favreau I trust… even when he has Sudeikis punching adorable Baby Yoda.
