When Rian Johnson’s whodunit mystery, Knives Out, hit theaters, it was clear that this was a franchise in the making. I mean, it’s a murder mystery movie in the vein of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, for crying out loud. To not make any more movies would be a disservice to Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc character and a disservice to the genre as a whole. So, I was happy to hear that even Johnson wanted to continue with at least one more film.
Then, earlier this week, there was a report from TheWrap that Knives Out helped bring Lionsgate’s revenue to $999 million for the third quarter. That’s right, that one little murder mystery film had managed to make a big impact. At this point, they’d be fools not to run with it, right? Yes, indeed.
Deadline is now reporting that on Thursday, during Lionsgate’s third-quarter earnings call, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed the sequel was officially to go. While we don’t know the actual state of the story, the script, the timeline, or any other specifics, we do know that the movie’s production is imminent. Johnson himself expressed his desire to shoot it in the next year, so I can only imagine it’ll be some time this year.

“I had such a good time making it, such a great time working with Daniel, and now just seeing that audiences are responding to it, the idea of continuing it on seems like it would just be a blast,” Johnson told Deadline on Oscar nomination day. “But there’s a lot that has to happen before that can happen, first and foremost being writing a script. So, we’ll see.”
I personally hope he doesn’t take long. While there were many great movies that hit last year, Knives Out was easily the most entertaining and rewatchable of the bunch for me. It’s so intricately crafted, and the character’s voices are so strong, it’s difficult not to want to punch the writer-director square in the face for making such a perfectly-written flick.
