About a month ago, it was rumored that professional wrestler-turned-actor John Cena was one of the many actors under consideration to play the character Shazam in the DC Extended Universe. However, if we’re to believe a new report from PW Insider, it sounds like that won’t be the case.
According to the outlet, Cena did in fact meet with Shazam director David F. Sandberg, but when all said and done, he did not come out as a frontrunner to star in the flick.

This news is admittedly mildly disappointing, as Cena’s comedic performances on film are pretty damn strong, and we think he could have done wonders to help bring levity to the DCEU. It’s doubly disappointing given how much he could be made up to look like Shazam himself. That being said, we’re sure Sandberg will pick someone else who’s a perfect fit for the role.
Shazam is a story that follows the character of Billy Batson, who after meeting a wizard, is given the ability to transform into the all-powerful Shazam (formerly known as Captain Marvel in the comics). The film adaptation from Lights Out director David F. Sandberg is currently in pre-production and casting, and as such, there have been plenty of rumors regarding who could be playing who, as well as a myriad of discovered auditions on Vimeo.
