Over the past month or so, Shazam! director David F. Sandberg and star Zachary Levi have been sharing little details left and right. In fact, they shared so much that you’d be forgiving for assuming they’d already started production on the upcoming DC film.
However, Sandberg just posted an Instagram photo chronicling the first shot of the film’s production, pretty much confirming that today is the first actual day of shooting.

While Aquaman is set to be the next film released the DC Extended Universe, I find myself a bit more excited thinking about Shazam! I enjoyed Justice League for what it was, but it did seem to be mired in all the stuff that came before, for better or worse. Yes, Aquaman will be a standalone piece, but since it follows one of the characters we’re already familiar with, there is sure to be just a little bit of carry-over from what came before.
With Shazam!, we’re dealing with a completely new film. Like Ant-Man after Avengers: Age of Ultron, Shazam! seems poised to be a real palate-cleanser for this universe, showing the wide breadth of content that is possible in the DC Extended Universe.
