Shazam! Rakes In $4M In Thursday Showings

UPDATE: THR is reporting that the film took in $5.9 million on Thursday.

ORIGINAL REPORT:

Shazam! is officially out in theaters. While many of us may still be salivating over the prospect of seeing Joker this coming October, we can’t forget that we’re being treated to another beloved DC property in theaters as we speak — and it looks like it’s off to a solid start. Not a ridiculous or record-breaking one, but a solid one, as Deadline reports.

According to the outlet’s sources, Shazam! has taken in an estimated $4 million to $4.4 million in its Thursday showings. Again, these are estimates, but I imagine they could reflect fairly well what we can expect from the film in the days to come. For comparison, Captain America: The First Avenger took in $4 million and ended up with a $65 million opening. On the other hand, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse took in $3.5 million and ended up with a $35.3 million opening.

Long story short, it’s hard to predict this, but the film does seem to be heading towards around $45 million to $50 million in North America this weekend. It’s not an amazing opening by many standards, but one has to keep its $90 million budget and more modest marketing approach. Plus, the outlet goes on to claim that it’s on track for a $145 million to $170 million worldwide opening, which would already comfortably put it either close to break-even, or at a profitable level. Coupled with its rave reviews from critics, DC will likely check this off as another consecutive win for them.
