DC’s next big film, Shazam, is in the midst of production as we speak, and while the studio has yet to release an official photo of the superhero in his full attire, there have been plenty of photos from fans that have leaked the character’s look. As it stands, it looks to be an almost literal transliteration from the superhero’s New 52 look, and while it may ultimately look pretty cool when the film is finished, some aren’t too happy about it.

In a recent Instagram live stream, star Zachary Levi was sent one question in the form of “WHY THE CRAP SUIT.” Never one to mince words, Levi answered this question as one would expect someone like him to.

“‘Why the crap suit?’ WOW! Okay, well I don’t think it’s a crap suit. I think my suit is f***in’ bomb, to be perfectly honest. I know that there hasn’t been an officially released photo yet, but there have been incredibly high-quality photos that have been released. And I think any of you people out there who are still hung up on what the suit looks like are just wanting to be angry for angry’s sake. I think you’re very insecure, you probably are dealing with some stuff in your own life, and you feel a little powerless, and I’m sorry that you do. Wherever you’re at and whatever you’re going through, I’m sorry that you’re going through that.

“But, I do think you should probably take a second and reflect on why you’re as negative as you are about maybe anything in life, and then re-look at the suit and go, ‘Actually hey, you know what? They’re trying really hard to make something that’s awesome and that pleases a lot of different people,’ because Captain Marvel’s been around for a really long time and has had a whole bunch of different iterations of suits. So, you can’t win ’em all, but you can at least hope that people will give you a fair shake.”

Ouch. Gotta wonder if DC is going to do some backpedaling on that. Also, if I were the studio, I would do my best to release an official image as soon as possible, so that fans can stop worrying about the quality of the set photo images.

No matter what superhero we’re talking about, there always seems to be fears about the costumes. Rewind back a few years, and some thought Doctor Strange’s look was stupid-looking. In fact, most superhero costumes look dumb before the studio gets in their to work their VFX and color correction magic. So much is changed after the fact that it’s a bit ridiculous to get worked up over a set photo, which will inevitably feature the actor in unflattering lightning.

Additionally, if there was one superhero who could afford to have a silly costume, it’s Shazam. Given that he’s a result of wish fulfillment, and that the movie will likely be pretty comedic, giving him a ridiculous and colorful costume wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
