Shazam! Tracking For $48 Million Opening

After the big shake up at DC Studios, Zachary Levi gives an update on his DCU status going forward.

Shazam! has some pretty big shoes to fill. While the DC Extended Universe has had quite the bumpy road over the years, last year’s Aquaman was an undeniable success. Critics, by and large, seemed to enjoy the film, and audiences worldwide took to it as well, allowing it to break $1.1 billion at the box office, setting a new record for any DC character in the entire history of film.

Can Shazam! possibly do the same in terms of performance? Honestly, probably not. It’s a more family-focused film, so that’s bound to turn off some fans who are down with the more mature takes on the superheroes, but that’s not to say it can’t do well enough in its own right. But that’s enough from me. How is the film actually tracking?

The folks over at Box Office Pro currently have the movie, which hits theaters on April 5, 2019, pegged to take in $48 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend. This could mark the lowest opening yet for a DC Extended Universe film, and is a substantial step down from Aquaman, which took in $67 million in its opening weekend. But the real kicker is what the movie is expected to hit over the course of its run in North America: $144 million.

Even for Aquaman — a film that had over 70% of its cume from overseas — they managed to take in $330 million. Of course, we don’t know the budget of Shazam! and there is well over a month until it hits, so are still plenty of other factors that have yet to be taken into consideration. In short…don’t be down about Shazam! just yet.
