Actor Shia LaBeouf has signed on to play real-life tennis star John McEnroe in upcoming biopic BORG/MCENROE, THR reports.
According to the outlet, the film will chronicle the great rivalry between tennis players Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe, which spanned in the 1970s and the 1980s.
In addition to LaBeouf, Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason will play Borg, and Stellan Skarsgard will portray Borg’s coach, Lennart Bergelin. Here’s what THR had to say about the legacy of the two tennis superstars.
“The cool, emotionless Borg and the wild, tantrum-throwing McEnroe faced each other 14 times on the professional tennis tour between 1978 and 1981, each winning seven of their matches. Their two Wimbledon finals, in 1980 and 1981, are considered among the greatest ever in the sport.”
Danish director Janus Metz said the following:
“This is a very powerful drama that plunges deep into the minds of two extremely interesting personalities living in an explosive era. I am very honored and excited to be at the reigns of itâ€
While LaBeouf may have proven to be rather unpredictable in his personal life in recent years, there is no denying that the man has the acting chops to make a role like this memorable.
