I knew that the Snake Eyes movie, which is now seemingly called Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, was gaining some momentum, but I completely forgot that it would be hitting theaters on October 23, 2020. With that in mind, you know it had to be getting in front of cameras very soon, especially given that it’s likely to have some legit visual effects that will need to be done. Well, you can now cross that “to-do” item off the list.
Production has officially started in Japan with a full cast that includes Henry Golding, Andrew Koji, Samara Weaving, Úrsula Corberó, Haruka Abe, Iko Uwais, and Takehiro Hira. That’s right, for this Japan-centric story, they actually have a good number of ethnically-appropriate stars, which is pretty great.

As one would expect from the title, this film will chronicle the origins of the mysterious Snake Eyes, a prominent character in the G.I. Joe canon. After two underwhelming (albeit financially-successful) films, it’s interested that they decided to go this route, but perhaps going the way of the Avengers isn’t the worst thing in the world, so long as they really do emphasize character.
