Somehow… Bob Iger Has Returned!

Disney CEO Bob Iger says Disney+ and Hulu are to merge and confirms they won't licence Marvel or Star Wars to Netflix.

Somehow… Bob Iger has returned! How you may ask? Dark science. Cloning. Secrets only the Sith knew? But as per THR‘s coverage, Bob Iger is back as CEO of Disney and he replaces Bob Chapek, who replaced him. The Walt Disney Co. has made a statement that new Bob (Chapek) is out and old Bob (Iger) is back.

“We thank Bob Chapek for his service to Disney over his long career, including navigating the company through the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic,” said Susan Arnold, chairman of the board, in a statement. “The Board has concluded that as Disney embarks on an increasingly complex period of industry transformation, Bob Iger is uniquely situated to lead the Company through this pivotal period.”

It seems Iger has been hiding out on Exegol and has built the largest fleet ever seen with Death Star lasers. Okay, enough with the Star Wars talk. Though, I do still blame Iger as one of those who enabled those utterly trash Star Wars sequels. What can’t really be argued though is that Iger was a success for Disney as a whole. So far, Chapek hasn’t been. However, a huge part of Chapek’s reign was during the unprecedented pandemic to be fair.

As reported by the trade,

Iger even acknowledged in an email to Disney employees Sunday that he is returning “with an incredible sense of gratitude and humility — and, I must admit, a bit of amazement.”

While Iger will be returning to his old role, the board also made it clear that his new term will be a temporary one.

Iger “has agreed to serve as Disney’s CEO for two years, with a mandate from the Board to set the strategic direction for renewed growth and to work closely with the Board in developing a successor to lead the Company at the completion of his term,” the board said. The revival of the “who will be Iger’s successor?” question is one that’s sure to be hotly debated, given that much of the prior decade saw a wave of executives be speculated about as a possibility, only to exit or be passed over.

Honestly, this is massively big industry news, but kinda doesn’t interest me personally. Top executives are simply business suits. There’s no entertainment talent among either of the Bob’s, so unless you’re a Disney investor, who cares? Will this have any dramatic effect on the big franchises we cover a lot like Marvel and Disney? Probably not, and both will still be left to Feige and Kennedy respectively. Iger famously presided over the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Fox. Therefore, maybe Iger will go and buy Sony this time? Ha, we can but only dream.

What do you think of the shocking news that somehow Bob Iger has returned? Are you convinced the Bob Eternal has a secret fleet of Star Destroyers hidden in Burbank? As always, leave any comments, humorous takes, or, whatever below.
