LRM RUMOR: Why The Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Needed Script Rework

What a confusing week last week was, eh? One minute the Obi-Wan Kenobi series was right on schedule and the next it was delayed. There were numerous reasons for this. As we reported ourselves, the Australian bushfires were one of the reasons for this. However, the big reason that was touted had to do with Lucasfilm having to rework the scripts for the series, and that only a couple of scripts had been done One rumor surrounding that reason is that it was too similar to The Mandalorian.

I myself wasn’t sure how I felt about this since this past August, when the series was revealed at D23, it was also revealed that the scripts for the entire series were already written. The rumor surrounding the scripts being true would imply that we were lied to about the state of the scripts. Sadly, the word from one of my sources falls in line with the script rewrites, and sheds a bit more light on why they were needed.

So, why the rewrites? Well, it has to do with the restrictions the series is being written under. According to my source, the writers aren’t allowed to use characters Darth Maul, Boba Fett, Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, Luke, Ahsoka Tano, or Clone Troopers because of their being utilized in other projects. Furthermore, they are limited to a very specific timeline within the Star Wars canon.

Now, this part is just speculation, but because writing with these restrictions is like threading a needle through the Star Wars canon, it’s possible that the story they wrote ended up looking and feeling a lot like The Mandalorian, prompting the need to rewrite. Personally, I still think this should have been realized sooner — especially if the scripts were already written — but better late than never, right?

Either way, the series is definitely still happening, but between the need to rewrite, the location issue, and scheduling, it does seem like delaying its production seemed like the right call.
