Sonic The Hedgehog: Is Super Sonic Headed To The Sequel?

Could Super Sonic be headed to the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel? Read on and find out!

Sonic the Hedgehog came and went in theaters not too long ago. And, in spite of the film being a laughingstock for its initial Sonic design, it did well! Critics were mostly lukewarm on the film, but fans really seemed to enjoy it. I personally thought it was a delightful little movie, even though it wasn’t amazing. Given the increasingly dreary circumstances of the world, it was exactly what I wanted to see when I saw it. Not every adaptation out there needs to be Avengers: Endgame to be a fun movie.

There were a lot of fun nods to the video games in Sonic the Hedgehog. From echidnas to mushroom worlds, if you’re a fan of the games, you likely saw a lot of fun Easter eggs. Considering it’s gone on to be the most successful video game movie to date, it’s pretty much guaranteed to get a sequel. But what other goodies could we get in the film? Could we, by chance, be seeing Super Sonic?

“I don’t know,” screenwriter Pat Casey said, speaking to a young Sonic fan during a Fandom livestream. “We’ll have to see. I mean you’d have to get a hold of a lot of Chaos Emeralds to make that happen [laughs]. So I can’t really say, but we are all aware of Super Sonic.”

For those who don’t know, Super Sonic is a transformation Sonic can achieve once he has gathered all seven Chaos Emeralds. In this form, he turns a gold color, not unlike the Super Saiyans in the Dragon Ball series. In fact, both the Super Saiyans and Super Sonic are often compared, for obvious reason.

Sadly, it’s almost impossible to tell if Super Sonic was inspired by the manga. The game transformation was revealed in November of 1992, while Super Saiyans were revealed in 1991. However, thanks to the production timeline of the game, it is likely that this is all just one big coincidence.

Regardless, it’s a knowing comment from Casey regarding Super Sonic’s potential appearance. Assuming they’re able to make this into a whole franchise, I could only imagine Super Sonic would be revealed for a film down the line. It could be the culmination of the franchise, especially if they focus on collecting Chaos Emeralds in future installments.

For now, I think the addition of Tails and the potential of Knuckles could be all the sequel needs to keep the franchise trucking along well. No need to blow their wads this early on in the game.

But what do you think of Casey’s comments? Do you think we’ll be seeing Super Sonic in the next Sonic the Hedgehog movie? Let us know your thoughts down below!
