“Sonic the Hedgehog! He can really move. he’s the fastest thing alive!”

Y’all remember that theme song from the ’90s cartoon? I certainly do. I enjoyed the hell out of it as a kid. As someone who grew up adoring the video games on Sega Genesis, it was one of the few instances of a video game character hitting the small screen and not immediately disappointing (yes, I’m looking at you, Super Mario Bros. Super Show). Though, while Sonic is easily adapted for animation, adapting him to live-action is another deal altogether.

Seriously, all the stuff we’ve seen of the character so far has been controversial, to say the least. Like Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, they are attempting to meld the worlds of live-action and animation. However, unlike Detective Pikachu, the character’s overall look hasn’t been met with very positive reception. What’s worse is that Jim Carrey’s Doctor Robotnik has been criticized as being painfully unfunny. My main concern is that this would be a disaster of Alvin and the Chipmunks-like proportions. And while I don’t think that’s the case…I can’t say it looks great either.

Below is the official synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog:

“SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic”
