Sony Looking At Digital Gifting And Digital Trade-In For PS5

Sony has been the absolute market leader when it comes to the current generation of games consoles. One of the main reasons for this was Sony’s stance following Xbox’s plans to go all digital this generation. The console giant campaigned hard to remind fans that the easiest way to share a game was to hand the disk over to a friend.

Yet this doesn’t really cover the full story as rumors abound that Sony was set to do the same thing until they saw the negative reaction fans had to Xbox announcement. Of course, we will likely never know for sure if this is true, but Sony does understand as a company that digital is the way forward.

According to ComicBook.com Sony has filed a patent which will finally allow players to send digital gifts to other friends and family. This aspect is something Sony has been lagging on with both PC gamers and Xbox gamers having been able to do this for some time.

Perhaps even more interestingly another Sony patent indicates that they are looking at the possibility of trading digital games somehow. Currently, as you’d imagine once you purchase a digital game you are unable to trade that in any way. Whereas with a disk, you can take it to your local trade store when finished and they will give you money off of your next game.

If Sony can find a way to do this successfully then it could give them an advantage moving in the next generation of consoles when they launch the inevitable PS5, which will be rivaled once again by X Box’s next console. However, patents do not always equal successful products, so we will see if it ever gets implemented or not?

Digital is definitely the way ahead for gamers, yet right now it’s also more expensive and prevents trade in or sell on. Personally, I’d rather just see money off the digital titles, after all, it costs more to manufacture and print disks, boxes and artwork etc, plus the stores selling the games need a cut as well.
