In 1973, teenaged Beth Bledsoe (Sophia Lillis) leaves her rural Southern hometown to study at New York University where her beloved Uncle Frank (Paul Bettany) is a revered literature professor. She soon discovers that Frank is gay, and living with his longtime partner Walid “Wally” Nadeem (Peter Macdissi) — an arrangement that he has kept secret for years. After the sudden death of Frank‘s father — Beth’s grandfather — Frank is forced to reluctantly return home for the funeral with Beth in tow, and to finally face a long-buried trauma that he has spent his entire adult life running away from.
Sophia Lillis’ pursuit for acting started at the age of seven while taking acting classes at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in Manhattan. After playing a recommended role at NYU she signed up with an agent and started participating in short films. Her breakthrough film was with the horror film, It and It Chapter Two. In between Lillis received her protagonist film playing, Nancy for Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase. Earlier this year she was seen playing Gretel in the fantasy, horror, Gretel & Hansel.

Peter Macdissi is the son of a Lebanese father and Armanian mother. He was born in Lebanon and grew up during the civil war. At a young age, Macdissi would entertain his family while the war noise was just outside their home. Due to the war it was impossible to pursue his dream and eventually left for Sweden where he had a short dancing career. Eventually he made it to Los Angeles and today is an actor and producer. He is known for The Loser, Six Feet Under, Towelhead and Three Kings.
I had a fun Zoom chat with Peter Macdissi and Sophia Lillis to discuss Uncle Frank. Lillis spoke about her favorite scene and how her character, Beth develops. Macdissi shared the fun he had playing Wally.
