Spider-Man: Far From Home Director Jon Watts Thinks A Spider-Man/Venom Crossover Would Work – I Disagree

There have been a few rumblings recently about a possible crossover between Sony’s Venom and the MCU version of Spider-Man. Now, whilst I can see why Sony would be keen for this to happen, I feel like It’s not something that would work within the current MCU, at least not with this version of Venom anyway. I’ll get more into why this wouldn’t work for me below, but as per the title, director of Spider-Man: Far From Home disagrees with me and thinks a Venom/Spidey crossover could work.

Speaking with CBM Watts was asked about those rumors of a crossover and what he thinks about it, here is his response.

“I found Venom to be so funny and I thought Tom Hardy was so great, I don’t know that they are so different, I think you put those two Toms together and you’re going to see something pretty special.”

Hmmm, I’m afraid despite Watts being the director of what is sure to be a Billion dollar movie soon, I do disagree with him. For me, when Sony decided to make Venom in a separate universe from the MCU as is their choice, they gave him an origin story, which strove to take away his connection to Spider-Man. So to put these two together right now is going to cause a major problem and we would be left with an unsatisfying version of the conflict between these two characters. For a start, Eddie Brock and Venom is an anti-hero in Venom, whereas in Spider-Man he is very much a villain, at least initially.

The conflict between Spider-Man and the symbiote mirrors the conflict between Peter Parker and Eddie Brock. So that when Pete rejects the symbiote, it has his skills, his powers, and all his knowledge and its hatred. When Venom is created when the symbiote bonds with Brock it adds his own hatred of Parker whom of course the symbiote knows is really Spider-Man. This combination proves deadly to Pete as Venom has all his abilities, knows his secret identity and doesn’t trigger his spider-sense. This doesn’t even get into the fact that Peter receives the symbiote at a time when he is being overworked as Spider-Man, therefore the new abilities and extra power are like as drug to him, and it takes his willpower and hero qualities to reject it completely.

That’s the hook in the Spider-Man and Venom story and without this interconnectivity then Venom would just be another ‘hero’ working with Spider-Man in any crossover. There is no reason to have Venom or Brock hate on Pete/Spidey, no reason for Venom to want to destroy Spider-Man and also no actual drama between the pair. The only way Venom could work in the MCU, in my opinion, is for it to be a different alternative universe take on the character, which has the comic book origin story. Yes, that could theoretically still be played by Tom Hardy, but it couldn’t be that version of Eddie Brock I don’t think?

I know that it’s doubtful anyone at Sony or Marvel cares what I think, but let me be clear when I say that I have zero interest in seeing that bastardized version of Venom appearing in the MCU, now or ever. However, give me a comic book version of a real Venom with the correct origin story and I am in the theatre opening weekend. Though, as said above, just because I don’t think it’ll work and have no interest in seeing it, doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen anyway.

What do you think of a Venom/Spidey crosso0ver, same concerns as me or like Watts do you think it could work? Let us know what you think in the usual spot below.
