Back in the 2008 film, Iron Man, leading man Tony Stark certainly spent a lot of time in his workshop creating what we now know as the iconic Iron Man suit. With the exception of Pepper Potts, Stark pretty much kept to himself in a lot of those scenes, and perhaps the one big saving grace of it all was the smart-aleck A.I. Stark created to help fuel his home. That A.I. was named JARVIS, and was the result of some creative license to update Stark’s Butler of the same name. JARVIS also took up residence in Stark’s suit for the longest time, before he turned into the sentient being, Vision.
Stark has since replaced the voice in his own suit, but don’t think that an A.I. will be exclusive to only his. As we know, Stark is the man responsible for Spider-Man’s own suped-up suit, and it comes complete with all kinds of fun features like the Spider-Tracer and insta-cling technology. But that’s not all!
Speaking with Spider-Man: Homecoming co-producer Eric Carroll, revealed that Spider-Man’s suit has its own A.I., and among its features is a “Training Wheels†protocol that walks Spidey through the ins and outs of his suit. Once the training wheels protocol is turned off, however, we find that the suit has a voice of its own.
“Which surprises [Peter Parker], because he doesn’t until Tony deactivates that… deactivates the [Training Wheels] protocol. So the suit starts doing a bunch of stuff. You know, it does a holographic interface, and things like that. But probably most notably, it starts talking to him, and he goes, ‘Oh, this is weird.’ And he starts asking it stuff, but he’s not super slick or Tony Stark smart, who invented the OS and did all this. He’s a kid. So he’s like, ‘Um, how do I get to where that thing is?’ And it’s like, ‘Um, I don’t know. Pretty much drive? How are you going to get there?’ And he’s like, ‘Um, if I didn’t have a car, let’s just say, how would I get there?’ And it’s like, ‘Well, if you walk…’ And he’s like, ‘No, OK, alright… I guess just give me directions and I’ll figure out the HOW I’m getting there.’
Sadly, this A.I. doesn’t sound like it’s much smarter than Siri, which is kind of a letdown, but understandable. We have to wonder if this is an A.I. that will sort of grow with its user and become smarter as Peter gets more acclimated with his suit. So who do they have set to voice the character? We don’t know yet. When asked, Carroll said he was “sort of†cast, but it was nothing official just yet.
We’ll have to wait and see who they end up with. In the meantime, we’ll just keep rewatching that Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer.
