Star Wars: Actor Richard E. Grant Reveals Surprising Benefit To Secrecy

It’s no surprise that Lucasfilm is a bit protective of their Star Wars I.P. I mean, sure, based on the number of leaks we’ve had in the months leading up to the film, it doesn’t seem like it’s worked incredibly well, but you know they’re at least trying, right? Like with Avengers: Endgame, it seems to start with revealing plot points to personnel on a need-to-know basis.

Pretty much, if you’re a bit player, you’re not going to be getting the entire script, and you’re only going to be getting what you get directly leading up to the whole thing. Actor Richard E. Grant, who plays Allegiant General Pryde in the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, found the experience uniquely liberating.

“Despite finding it weird at the beginning, being given a script that you could only go into a conference room and read it surrounded by security—in a way, that liberates you,” Grant told io9. “You think, ‘Well, if I flub the lines on the day, because I’ve been given them on the day, [it’ll be okay] because I didn’t have three weeks to prepare this.’ So there’s an advantage to that. That made it unique. I’ve never had an experience like that before.”

I can see the liberation that would bring. It almost serves as an excuse since you weren’t able to do your homework beforehand, and it does certainly seem to put a lot more pressure on the director to give the actor the lay of the land and the motivations of the character in that moment.
