Star Wars: Bob Iger Confirms Next Film After Episode IX

Here’s a bit of “old new” confirmed, for those of you who have already been following. When it was announced that Disney would be releasing their next Star Wars film in 2022 following the conclusion of the Sequel Trilogy later this year, there were several other reports that this would be the David Benioff and Dan Weiss trilogy (as opposed to the Rian Johnson trilogy). The report came from so many sources, it’s one of those things that was pretty much reported as fact.

Now, we can set that in stone, as in a recent Q&A conference call (via Attractions Magazine) with Disney CEO Bob Iger, it was confirmed that the next film in the franchise would be coming from the Game of Thrones creators and showrunners. Again, this is something pretty much everyone assumed would be the case, but it’s worth reiterating that it hadn’t ever been officially confirmed until now.

Of course, D&D are a big subject online these days — what with the final season of Game of Thrones underway — and it hasn’t all been sunshine and roses. Fans have been very critical of the way they have handled the ending of the series, and some have also expressed concern in them hopping on board to another big franchise.

To those people, I can only point out how completely different Star Wars and Game of Thrones are from one another. One is a simple space fantasy story, and one is a complex web of interconnected stories. While, of course, I can’t guarantee the quality of their trilogy, I don’t think their work on Game of Thrones is necessarily indicative of what we’ll be getting in Star Wars.
