Star Wars: Bob Iger Says They Are Not Ruling Out More Trilogies

The future of Star Wars continues to be one big question mark for fans, but it also seems to be a similar question mark for those directly involved in its making. It’s been clear for some time that Lucasfilm needs to take some time to figure out the future of this multi-billion-dollar franchise, and it seems that some potentially-conflicting statements between Disney CEO Bob Iger and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy are evidence of that.

Earlier this week, we reported on Kennedy’s statements essentially saying they were looking to move away from the trilogy structure we’ve come to expect from the franchise, and now Iger is at least hinting that they aren’t ruling out more trilogies.

“Oh, I don’t know about that,” Iger told Variety when asked about the plan to move past trilogies. “She and I have said, ‘Well, maybe trilogies are too hard, so maybe we’ll make one film and then a sequel,’ but we don’t know.”

So, it sounds like they’re open to doing more trilogies, but are still at the stage of figuring things out. One thing here that I think is interesting is that Kennedy doesn’t seem to be considering the Marvel formula, as I’d expected (where you can have a limitless story over limitless movies), but rather seems to be more in favor of full standalone experiences that can later have sequels if necessary.

I will say, I think this is an approach that works best under Kennedy’s leadership. She has always seemed much keener on letting a filmmaker express their own perspective on the franchise than in telling one major story, and after hearing this, it all seems to make sense. Perhaps she and Lucasfilm were interested in more unique voices, but the realities of a franchise seemed to take precedent, when all said and done.

What do you think of Iger’s comments and do they change your perspective on how the movies should be made? Let us know your thoughts down below!
