Star Wars Doesn’t Need Luke Skywalker Anymore Says Mark Hamill

Star Wars doesn’t need Luke Skywalker anymore says star Mark Hamill. Hamill of course needs no introductions and last played the character of Luke (properly) in The Last Jedi. However, since then Hamill has also appeared as a Force Ghost within sequel The Rise of Skywalker as well as been de-aged to appear within The Mandalorian Season 2 and The Book of Boba Fett.

However, speaking with CBS News recently Hamill appears to indicate he is done with Luke finally. Hamill does add, never say never, however he feels Star Wars just doesn’t need Luke anymore.

“Well, you never say never, but I just don’t see any reason to,” Hamill said about reprising the role of Luke Skywalker. “Let me put it that way: I mean, they have so many stories to tell, they don’t need Luke anymore. I had my time, and that’s good. But that’s enough.”

There are many fans who had hoped to see some Luke Skywalker stories using the de-aged Hamill. However, in a previous interview with Esquire Magazine Hamill said, he doesn’t think those stories are needed. However, if Lucasfilm did want to go that direction, Hamill would be more positive towards recasting the role with an age appropriate actor.

“People say, ‘Oh, now you’re going to be able to do a whole series of Luke post-‘Return of the Jedi.’ I said, ‘I don’t think so,’” Hamill told Esquire. “First of all, they don’t need to tell those stories, but if they do, they could get an age-appropriate actor.”

There is one more appearance I and (I think) many Star Wars fans would like to see from Hamill. In the related section above, Hamill says he’s heard nothing about coming back for the Rey Sequel currently in development. However, I still think we could, and should get one last appearance.

Rey is rebuilding the Jedi Order in the new movie. Therefore, whether she is the focus or not, I would write one final Luke scene. Have Luke appear at a poignant moment and tell her he’s not going to come back again. Tell her that his part in the story is over. It’s up to Rey now to rebuild the Jedi Order, without the same mistakes that were made in the past. It could also be written to indicate that Rey has been relying on the guidance Force Ghosts. Luke has already taught Rey the Force Ghost trick, so there is nothing more for her to learn.

For me, that would just be a great way to tie everything off, and have an excuse for why Luke doesn’t just show up and help all the time. Kind of like an official retirement party that the fans can share in. But hey, that’s just my opinion and I’m not making the new Star Wars movie sadly for me, and luckily probably for everyone else.

What do you think? Hamill says Star Wars doesn’t need Luke Skywalker anymore. Do you agree it’s time to move on from Luke? Would you like to see one last cameo in the next movie as a Force Ghost? Thoughts below as always.
