Microsoft’s Xbox Showcase event is imminent and this year the software giant promises no CGI trailers. One thing both MS and Sony have been accused of is filling their events with CGI trailers which don’t really represent what the game is, or how it looks and plays.
However, that is likely the only similarity between the two firms when it comes to first party releases. Sony has released a stream of quality first party games, whereas Xbox, as per usual, hasn’t. New games are always promised on the horizon, but very few of note have dropped and the last big one Halo: Infinite was hardly a world beater, it was better than Halo 5, and that’s about as much as I’d say.
Xbox marketing chief Aaron Greenberg said in a tweet (below):
“None of our first party games in the show are full CG trailers. Everything is either in-game footage, in-engine footage, or in-game footage with some cinematics. Each of our trailers will be labelled so it is hopefully clear for our fans.”

Xbox Games Showcase will be livestreamed on June 11 at [10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm GMT] and is immediately followed by a Starfield Direct. Starfield from Bethesda as we already know is now an Xbox exclusive after MS bought Bethesda’s parent company. Fans are therefore keen to see some actual gameplay of a game that’s been hyped and not seen for years now. The fact we are getting a separate event for Starfield indicates we are finally getting a proper look at how the game plays and the stories that may be involved.

As for what else to expect on the Xbox Showcase, who knows? Probably some actual footage of previous CGI announcements like Hellblade II.
One thing different form last year is that Greenberg won’t make any kind of 12 month commitment. Last year Xbox announced all the games shown would be out by now and that is not the case. More importantly I think is that there was very little outside of Indy games that caught anyone’s attention. Meanwhile, PlayStation players are salivating over the upcoming Spider-Man 2 footage. Let’s hope the showcase on June 11 has something exciting to show alongside Starfield.
