Star Wars: Ewan McGregor Believes The Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Will Use Mandalorian Technology

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series using Mandalorian technology? Yes, please!

I wasn’t the biggest fan of The Mandalorian. Yes, I think it’s an entertaining show with lots of potential, but story-wise, there’s still a lot to be desired. But I can’t deny what it brings to the table that Star Wars hasn’t brought since the Prequel Trilogy: real technological advancements. Don’t get me wrong, the Sequel Trilogy was well-made and exceptional from a visual effects standpoint. But you didn’t hear much about the technology that went into making the films. Star Wars has an amazing legacy, and one constant is how much it influenced the visual and special effects industries.

The Mandalorian brought things back to basics in that sense. I may not have been crazy about the story, but I couldn’t consume enough content breaking down its leaps in technology. With the Stagecraft, actors could act in a sound stage in what looks like a real environment in the moment. No more green screens. It’s all done in the moment and in-camera. It was literally a way to bring expensive VFX and a galaxy-hopping narrative on a reasonable budget. So, it’s no surprise they’ll be utilizing the tech once again. And, as you’d imagine, it’d make the acting experience that much more fun.

“I think I am going to enjoy it much more,” McGregor told ACE Universe. “[The prequels] were all blue screen and green screen and it was hard to imagine, but nowadays I think things have moved on so much, and I think a lot of what you see is gonna be what we see on the set. I don’t know if you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes of The Mandalorian series, but they employ that incredible screen.”

“It’s pretty amazing,” McGregor continued. “It makes you feel like you’re in the place, it’s going to feel realer for us as actors. And I think we’ll be using some of that technology on our show.”

And as great as that is, McGregor isn’t just excited to play around with the new technology. He’s at a different place in his life than he was when he starred in the Prequel Trilogy. As such, he believes in a much better place to enjoy his work now than many years back.

“I think I’m more excited about playing Obi-Wan again now than I was even the first time, because you live and learn. And the more I realize what I’m part of,” McGregor reflected. He then stated how back when he was younger, Star Wars felt more like just another movie he was a part of. “But now, with a bit of looking back on it, you can see you’re involved in something quite huge in the Star Wars — I don’t like the word franchise — sort of fable or legend.”

Well, if that wasn’t enough to get you excited, I don’t know what will be. As we know now, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series was supposed to shoot earlier this year, but was pushed due to script rewrites. Here’s hoping Lucasfilm can get it right and make a show worthy of McGregor’s acting prowess.
