Star Wars: Obi-Wan Spinoff Movie Rumored To Film In Ireland Next Year

We just can’t stop, won’t stop hoping that somewhere down the line, we’ll be getting that long-awaited Obi-Wan spinoff film. It’s been rumored since Lucasfilm first announced they would be making anthology films that one would chronicle an adventure of the Jedi-in-hiding at some point between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

Now, The Belfast Telegraph is reporting that Star Wars creator George Lucas was in Belfast this past Christmas. His reason? He was scouting locations for, you guessed it, an Obi-Wan spinoff. The outlet even went so far as to state that Ewan McGregor would be reprising his role, which he’s played since 1999’s The Phantom Menace.

While Lucas was the one doing the scouting, the outlet only stated that he gave his approval for the spinoff film to film in Northern Ireland, though he was working to keep it all quiet. Here’s what an insider told the outlet:

“We’ve been told there will be work throughout 2019 because Star Wars is coming to Belfast. It was all very low key, only a few people knew that the old guy walking round the set was George Lucas. It was only when we were told about Star Wars coming here next year that it dawned on us that was why he was here before Christmas.”

While some may think this is a hint that Lucas himself may be helming the project, it’s a move that seems highly unlikely. Lucasfilm has always worked to distance themselves from many of his ideas and overall influence since Disney made the purchase. That being said, perhaps they could work out a deal that gives him some, but not complete, influence on a project like this.

This all sounds promising, but as of right now, it’s all hearsay, and with 2019 still nearly a full year away, there’s plenty of time for those plans to fall through.
