Star Wars Rumor: Lucasfilm Looking For Young Luke Skywalker For Obi-Wan Show

As rumors go, this one actually seems pretty obvious when you think about it, we’ve known for some time that Disney+ would be the new home of the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. At one time this was a movie, but plans were changed, and we will now be getting this story in the form of a Disney+ show.

Daniel Richtman, who has a pretty good record in the movie scoops game recently revealed that he has heard Lucasfilm is looking for an actor to play a young version of Luke Skywalker for this show on his Patreon service. There was never any guarantee that Luke would show up in the show, but given the period and what Obi-Wan’s focus is at this time, I certainly expected Luke to show up. I do not, however, believe Luke will play a significant part in the show, I’ll guess that we may not get many, if any speaking lines. I could even imagine a situation where Obi-Wan looks on from a distance at young Luke. I do, however, expect Owen Lars to show up and Joel Edgerton I’ll wager will reprise his role from Revenge of the Sith.

My reasoning is simply that in A New Hope, Luke seems to know how Ben Kenobi is on-site, but doesn’t appear to have much of a connection with him. I guess I’m saying that from Luke’s perspective it feels like he is meeting Ben properly for the first time. However, that’s in no way cast iron and it certainly leaves enough wiggle room for alternatives without changing the nature of that encounter in A New Hope.

We have no idea as yet, when to expect this Obi-Wan centric show begin production or arrive on screens. All we truly know is that Ewan McGregor will return as Obi-Wan/Ben and that the head writer for the show will be Hossein Amini. Amini previously talked about why the story will work better as a long-form show than it would have as a movie when chatting with Discussing Film.

“I think because of what we were speaking about before, the situation is so complex both for him personally and in a way, the state of the galaxy, you sort of need time to explore it and to be honest there are loads of other stories within that period as well, it’s quite a few years, there is so much going on between [Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope] that hasn’t been explored. The idea of being able to go into a character journey plus the politics and plus all the vastness of the empire and what’s going on is exciting just because it feels like a proper period of history and sometimes that is hard to do in two hours. Sometimes with two-hour movies there is always an imperative for the action and the plot to move particularly fast and quickly and to go from action sequence to action sequence and there are many more aspects to storytelling that I find interesting. Well he was one of my favorite characters, probably because he spans throughout both the trilogy and the prequels and it’s just something about how different he is from one to the next that is really fascinating and makes him such an iconic character. It’s also that I loved Star Wars because I’ve always been interested in different religions, like the whole notion of the samurai I’ve always loved, there are so many aspects of Star Wars that particularly appealed to me when I was a kid and it’s been actually really exciting being able to look at all the animated series and read many of the books it’s a whole world and galaxy that I’ve loved diving into.”

That’s about all we know right now, though I guess details will start to seep out the closer we get to a production start date. Though, your guess is as good as mine as to when that might be?
