Star Wars Rumor: Will The Future Of Star Wars be the ‘High Republic’ Period?

The Star Wars Skywalker Saga is finished, although, for me it ended in 1983, because I just can’t look at this sequel trilogy and buy it as the finale of this story. However, Star Wars will continue and in what form it will continue has been endlessly debated and guessed by fans around the world. Will they go into the future, will they go back to the past, or to a different Galaxy?

We know that Disney has set release dates for the next three Star Wars movies, though doubts exist as to whether those are a trilogy of stories or not. Right now though, we have no actual creatives attached to these movies, the first of which is due in December 2022. Since the former Game of Thrones showrunners Benioff and Weiss stepped away from making these three movies there has been no mention of who could come in next. Rumor was that Benioff and Weiss were going into the past for new stories and according to the latest rumors and leaks, it looks as though that setting will remain no matter who comes in next.

MSW which has a pretty good record for Lucasfilm leaks, (they got the majority of their leaks correct for The Rise of Skywalker) has released some information over the weekend about where they think the Star Wars movies are heading. According to the scoop site, the new movies will link with something called ‘Project Luminous’. Luminous is apparently a plan to craft stories that complement one another from a period in the past known as the ‘High Republic’ period. This period is around 400 years prior to the events of the Skywalker Saga, and the only known character that could make an appearance would, of course, be Yoda, who was a spry 400+ only at that point.

In a lot of ways, this is a good idea. If the movies are going to tell stories from this period, it makes sense for there to be a collaborative approach where the comics, games, TV shows all start to offshoot stories from this era also. It also completely distances itself from the events and characters of what we know Star Wars to be, again, Yoda aside. MSW state that the plan is to have the Jedi knights exploring the Unknown Regions and perhaps coming across the Sith who would at this time be coming up with their ‘rule of two’. It could even lead to a situation where Yoda knows a lot more than he is letting on when the Sith return again in The Phantom Menace. Other Jedi definitely say the Sith have been extinct for a thousand years, but Yoda appears less sure of that and it is him that tells Mace Windu about the rule of two at the end, could this be him referring to a conflict he was involved with before they all were born, and perhaps it was kept under wraps?

Most of this is simply wild speculation on my part, but the rumor is out there now, and it surely won’t be too long before we start to get more details if Disney has this grand unified approach all set up? If of course, the rumor has validity, which we cannot be sure of despite the outlet’s good hit rate in the recent past.

Would this period of time interest you as a fan, are you about done with Star Wars or prepared to see what Disney puts out next? Leave your thoughts below as always if you have them.
