Star Wars Set To Break $200 Million Domestically, $425 Million Globally In Opening Weekend

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is hitting theaters this weekend, and with that, it’s expected to make a pretty penny at the box office. But how much is it set to make?

According to THR, on the domestic front, the film will take in somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 million in its opening weekend. This is compared to Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $248 million haul back in 2015. While some may be shocked that this film won’t match that one in terms of its performance, we have to keep in mind that there was a lot of pent-up excitement for the film, since it been 10 years since we saw a Star Wars film (and decades since we saw anyone from the original trilogy).

All the same, we can’t look at $200 million as anything but a success.

But what will the film make globally? The outlet goes on to project that it will make somewhere in the neighborhood of $425 million worldwide. This is compared to The Force Awakens’ $529 million. Again, by comparison some may see it as a disappointment, but I’ll refer to my comments above regarding the excitement for a new Star Wars flick.

$425 million is still a lot better than last year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which opened up at $290.1 million worldwide.

We’re interested to see if the film will exceed these projections. As of right now, the film is sitting at 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 140 reviews, so this positive reception may help the film outperform these numbers.

What do you think the film will make this weekend? Domestically, I personally think the film will hit somewhere in the $220 million range, but I may be overly optimistic. Let us know what you think down below!
