A new Star Wars: The Last Jedi image surfaced today via the Twitter account of Yahoo! Movies. The image shows the current trilogy’s heroine, Rey, on the island of Ahch-to, with her back to us holding her bow staff. My interpretation of the photo is that it depicts Rey while training on the island with Luke Skywalker. You can see the tweet below.

With Luke’s comments in the trailer, “It’s time for the Jedi to end,” it isn’t easy to judge what kind of mental or emotional state the fabled Jedi master is in, but I get the feeling he is going to be like a retired cop in an action movie, and will be persuaded to come back for one last mission, which in this case would be training Rey in the ways of the Jedi. How Rey convinces him remains to be seen, but I will be interested to see how his training techniques for Rey will differ from the methods Master Yoda used to train him in The Empire Strikes Back. I really hope the movie spends more time on this than in previous films.

I expect the training to be much, much different as Luke had to have gained much knowledge about the Jedi and the Force over the last 30 years. He may have realized critical flaws in the Jedi Code and revised it to his liking. I think this would be especially true for the timeframe of after Kylo Ren turned on him, I can see this devastating Luke and causing him to reexamine the entire philosophy. It also seems as if Disney has been pushing ‘the grey’ ever since they purchased Lucasfilm in 2012. The concept of the grey comes mostly from the expanded universe where grey Jedi utilize both sides of the force and it is possible Luke could very have taken on a similar centrist view on the force. His views on both the Force and the Jedi Order may be far different than the Luke Skywalker we last seen on the forest moon of Endor in Return of the Jedi.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens December 15, 2017.
