Star Wars: The Mandalorian Star Slams The Rise Of Skywalker

Disclaimer: Spoilers for The Mandalorian episode “The Gunslinger.”

Welp, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has officially hit theaters, and by this point, you probably have an opinion as to whether or not you think it was a fitting finish to the entire saga as a whole, a piece of trash, or something in between that’s entertaining, yet flawed. I’ve honestly grown to like the movie less and less as I’ve spent nearly SIX HOURS talking about it across various podcasts since its release, but I still think it has some redeeming qualities.

But, of course, because we’re in a world of hyperbole, most people are pushing really extreme narratives, including one of the stars of The Mandalorian, Jake Cannavale. In the Disney+ series, Cannavale plays wannabe bounty hunter Toro Calican who flies a little too close to the sun…and perhaps there’s a bit of a metaphor there, as Cannavale seems to have done just that in his comments against The Rise of Skywalker on Instagram.

Here’s what the actor said on social media.

Rise of Skywalker was hands down the worst Star Wars movie,” the star wrote on his story (via Digital Spy). “An absolute f***ing failure. Went to see it last night and I woke up still mad. Like… it rendered the entire new trilogy completely useless.

Cannavale continued: “There were more plot holes than there was plot. The amount of ‘by the ways’ was absolutely infuriating. Rise of Skywalker (btw dumbass title) was worse than Phantom Menace AND Last Jedi combined. Fight me.”

Of course, this didn’t stop the internet from biting back, with some pointing to him being bitter about his character getting killed off in his episode. When accused of that, Cannavale answered genuinely.

“Honestly, I think I’d be more mad,” he wrote. “Obviously I can’t speak on behalf of the cast. To some actors this is just a job and maybe they’re just happy to be working. To which I say more power to them. Also, maybe they f***ing loved the new Star Wars! In which case that’s f***ing dope that they got to work on something they truly got to enjoy.”

Cannavale continued: “Personally, I’ve been a huge Star Wars fan since I was a kid. And I felt pretty let down by the overall laziness of this new trilogy, and also a bit angry at the entitlement of it for pretty much seizing control of the franchise as a whole by basically [saying], ‘Nah we don’t like the ending that everybody’s been cool with for decades, let’s change it!’

“I personally would feel pretty depressed if I was in the new Star Wars movie (as a main character I mean. If I was a dude wearing an alien puppet or whatever I’d be f***ing stoked… but still),” Cannavale concluded.

It’s clear that Cannavale has some mad passion for the Star Wars franchise — and it’s probably why he signed on to The Mandalorian to begin with. That being said, he may have bit the hand that feeds him with those comments, so I’d be surprised if he’d be working with J.J. Abrams or Lucasfilm again any time soon…
