Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – A New Rumor Says Steven Spielberg may Have Saved Babu Frik

According to a new rumor the best new character in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the droidsmith Babu Frik, almost didn’t make it through the film. According to concept artist Ivan Manzella, and creature and special make-up effects creative supervisor Neal Scanlan, it was none other than The Beard himself, Steven Spielberg, that saved Babu Frik.

As the story goes, upon finishing screening the film, Spielberg simply asked a question, and then the crew took Babu off of the exploding planet Kijimi, and put him on Zorii Bliss’ ship. I’ll let Scanlan and Manzella tell you the rest. You can check out what they had to say about the situation below.

Neal Scanlan:

“It could be a rumor, but I believe [director] J.J. [Abrams] screened the movie for Steven Spielberg, and at the end, Spielberg said, ‘What happened to Babu?’ Everybody thought, ‘Oh God, what did happen to Babu?’”

Ivan Manzella:

“I think he was going to die originally – I think the AD shot that. When the planet [Kijimi] was blown up, he was on it. We shot several other sequences. The ILM guys found one, lifted out Babu and put him into Zorii’s ship at the end.”

While I am sure there are fans who didn’t care for Babu, and they’re entitled to their opinion, one would be hard-pressed to find a substantial number of them. I mean, I don’t have any data to back that up, just my opinion. I think most people liked Babu Frik. For me, it just felt like old Star Wars. Babu could have fit in almost anywhere in the original trilogy. Mos Eisley Cantina, Cloud City, and even the forest moon of Endor.
