Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Writer Wishes They Could Have Split The Movie Into Two Parts

One of the common criticisms of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was the amount of plot that seemed to be crammed into that running time. I personally thought the movie was pretty average but enjoyable enough as a popcorn flick. It just seemed to be moving at hyper speed and for me, the emotional beats didn’t have enough time to connect because the plot was so busy.

Turns out even writer Chris Terrio had similar feelings about the movie, and was actually hoping instead for it to be split into two parts. This wouldn’t be that unusual considering what we say with Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and even Avengers. But then it would not have had that classic nine-part episode structure and would not have been a trilogy in Star Wars fashion. Terrio spoke about all this recently with Awards Daily and here is what he said about splitting the movie into two parts.

“I wish we could have done that. There is a lot of plot in the movie, and as a writer, you always want scenes to let the plot breathe more. If there were a way of doing it, splitting it would have been my dream. We could have written these characters forever. There was so much backstory that had to be left by the wayside. I wish that we could have that, but George always said it was nine movies. That was the natural size of the saga, and so, other than a few initial discussions, we never really advanced that conversation. Of course, as a writer, it breaks your heart to leave stuff on the table that you think would have given the story more depth and nuance and to give the characters more to do. Speaking for myself and not on the part of the studio, I do wish there could have been a “Part 1” and a “Part 2.””

This is a tricky one, and again it’s going to go back to how you feel about this Star Wars trilogy. For me, the problem was that The Last Jedi didn’t give us enough story to lead us into an exciting conclusion, whereas, if you were a fan of The Last Jedi, you probably feel like The Rise of Skywalker didn’t pay off the themes began in that movie.

I’m not sure if I would have been happy with a part one and part two, as for me there was too much wasted time in this trilogy and it felt like the lack of an overall plan to end it was one of the fundamental issues. Saying that, if it made for two better overall movies, then perhaps I would have enjoyed it more? Terrio previously spoke about the influence of The Last Jedi on The Rise of Skywalker when he spoke with Rolling Stone prior to release.

“It’s a democratization of Star Wars, saying that your lineage and your blood doesn’t necessarily determine who you are, and your past doesn’t determine your future. But we took those provocations as ideas that we could grapple with and hopefully expand upon in this film, because I don’t think it’s a dialectic of one or the other, where either you come from nothing or you are born royalty. There’s a lot of ground in between. Even [Kylo] Ren’s terminology isn’t… When he says “You’re no one” — well, what does that mean? Is that how Rey would think about herself? Does Rey even think of these questions? I’m trying not to reveal any story points here! There’s a Gordian knot in my tongue. I think those are really valid ideas that Rian put forth, but any series of films, especially if you have three, is a conversation — which is, as I said early on when I was talking to J.J., thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. If Force Awakens asks the question of who is Rey and where did she come from, and then The Last Jedi answered it with a negative in a certain way, hopefully The Rise of Skywalker will take those two ideas and create a third thing.”

Again I’m not sure what we got really speaks to Abrams and Terrio liking the direction The Last Jedi took things like they both claim, and (again for me) it left them trying to cram too much in to make a finale that would satisfy the majority of fans. It’s still too early to tell for me, if they succeeded in that task.
