Star Wars: When Rian Johnson Will Start Work On His Trilogy

I know what you’re all thinking. You’re all so thrilled with the work Rian Johnson did on Star Wars: The Last Jedi that you’re wondering when the man will be heading back into the Lucasfilm-owned world. Prior to the release of The Last Jedi, it was announced that he would be working on an original trilogy set outside of the normal timeline we’ve come to expect from the franchise, though it never specified when.

Over the course of the past several months since the film hit, various outlets have asked him of his progress, and there really hasn’t been much momentum. Whenever asked, he gave answers implying he’d only done the broadest strokes of planning for its overall direction, if any at all. However, at CinemaCon, Johnson gave an update on when he’d be working on the project.

“Something else for #StarWars fans, @rianjohnson said on the #CinemaCon stage he was going back to a galaxy far far away after ‘Knives Out’.”

So, for those who don’t know, Knives Out is set to hit theaters on November 27 of this year. The man will likely be making press rounds in the weeks leading up to and the week or two after. Then, of course, there is holiday breaks and all that. While there’s a chance he could get some work in in December, I think January 2020 is about when we could expect him to dive headfirst.

This may disappoint those of you who were hoping that rumors of him being canned by Disney were true, but hopefully with him handling his own characters and timeline, he will no longer be tampering with a canon that isn’t really his, and therefore will be less prone to upsetting the fanbase.

But what do you think of all this? Are you happy to hear he’s still on board? Let us know down below!
