Static Shock And The Rest Of Milestone Returning To DC

When you bring up a superhero like Static Shock the first thing you’d probably think of the Saturday morning cartoon. In this series, the main character Virgil Hawkins aka Static was voiced by Phil Lamar. You’d also probably believe that this character originated a DC Comics.

The reality is that Static Shock was created by Dwayne McDuffie and Denys Cowan at Milestone Media. In 2008 the characters of Milestone were incorporated into New Earth. Since the television series at WB, we really haven’t seen much of Static or any of the characters from the Milestone label. Luckily for comic book fans, yesterday’s surprise comic book panel was regarding the future of Milestone at DC Comics.

Marc Bernardin along with DC CCO Jim Lee moderated the panel that included Milestone partner/producer Reggie Hudlin, Milestone co-founder Denys Cowan along with Lamar. Here they began by talking about the origins and importance of this historic, groundbreaking imprint. Along with the legacy of Milestone co-founder, Dwayne McDuffie.

Then came the conversation about Milestone’s future plans. Hudlin talked about the plans to create multimedia opportunities spotlighting Milestone characters that include feature films, animated films, and podcasts. One of the feature films in production that he mentioned was, of course, Static Shock. Also let’s not forget the source material, comic books!

In February of 2021, Milestone’s return will be led by an all-new Static Shock digital comic book series. Further down the line, we will also see an original graphic novel written by Hudlin, with artwork by Kyle Baker. Other heroes we’ll see from Milestone include Icon & Rocket also written by Hudlin with artwork by Cowan. Other titles will be announced at a later date.

If you’re looking to take a look at some of the original Milestone series you’re in luck. Lee announced that there will be several publishing initiatives for 2020. Starting next month through February of next year, DC will digitize classic stories from the Milestone library and make them available for purchase at Comixology, Amazon Kindle, Apple, and other participating digital retailers. A list of these titles will be released as they are prepared for digital release.

At the second DC FanDome event on September 12th, fans will have the opportunity to check out these characters and stories. There will be a 17-page sampler titled, Milestone Returns #0 that will be available for 24 hours. This is written by Hudlin with Greg Pak with a cover by Denys Cowan and Chris Sotomayor. This sampler will re-introduce fans to Milestone characters like Static Shock, Icon, Rocket, Duo, and others. This book will feature awesome artwork from Cowan, Jim Lee, Ryan Benjamin, Khoi Pham, Scott Hanna, Bill Sienkiewicz, Don Ho, Alex Sinclair, and Deron Bennett.
