Stephen And Donald Glover Replace Justin Simien As Writers Of Lando Star Wars Series

It seems Stephen and Donald Glover have replaced Justin Simien as the writers of the Lando Star Wars series on Disney+. The show was announced what seems like years ago now. It will star Donald Glover as a younger version of Lando Calrissian, a role the actor also played in Solo. Initially, it was a Justin Simien (Haunted Mansion) pitch for the show which Lucasfilm decided to greenlight. However, after this nothing seemed to go anywhere. Interestingly, in his most recent interview with THR, Simien said as far as he knew, he was still writing the show. However, Lucasfilm said scheduling meant he had to put a pin in it. Erm, oops.

“I am attached, I think, but I don’t really know. (Laughs.) The last thing I was told was that they loved it but needed to put a pin in it until they could figure out everybody’s availability. I haven’t investigated further, but I’m not an idiot. I’m not alone in that experience. But I can’t help but wonder, “Am I too Black? Am I too queer? And people just don’t want to say that?” Because it seems like I develop things with these companies and they just never happen for reasons unknown.”

Well, Simien thought this might happen and it has. That article was only published earlier today (yesterday when you read this). Since then, an exclusive Barside Buzz from Jezz Sneider on his Above the Line website said Stephen and Donald Glover (brothers) are now writing the show on their own. This article was literally just out the door when Variety ran the exact same story. Which, I think you’ll agree takes it out of the Barside Buzz territory. Here is what the trade had to say.

New Lando Writers

I took the quotes from Variety, but the kudos has to go to Sneider for being first to make this claim.

‘Brothers Donald and Stephen Glover have signed on to write Lucasfilm’s Lando series for Disney+, Variety has confirmed.’

‘News first broke of a Lando Calrissian limited series being in the works in December 2020. At the time, “Dear White People” creator Justin Simien was attached to the project. Though, it would seem he’s no longer attached as Variety has been told the Glover brothers will be writing the series alone. Simien most recently directed Disney’s “Haunted Mansion,” which is scheduled for a July 28 release. The deal was reached prior to the writers strike.’

I must admit I always wondered why Glover hadn’t pitched his own idea as an established writer himself. However, I just assumed he didn’t have a story and was treating it just as an acting opportunity. I guess that’s now all changed? Given Variety‘s statement that the Glover brothers are writing this alone I guess means Simien is out completely. One would assume then, that this is a page 1 rewrite rather than someone taking another pass at what Simien already out together. I guess we’ll have to wait and see is Simien gets a story credit.

Fans have been wondering for a long time know, will Lando even actually get made? Frankly, the fact the Glover brothers are now writing it, means the star is likely more keen to clear his schedule and get this under cameras. Just ‘getting made’ wise, this is probably a big positive for Lando. That’s irrespective of which idea/pitch was best.

What do you think as Stephen and Donald Glover have replaced Justin Simien as the writers of the Lando Star Wars series on Disney+? Thoughts below as always.
