Stephen King’s Joyland To Get TV Treatment At Freeform

I know what you’re thinking. You’re a hardcore Stephen King fan and yet you’re only given a paltry serving of 167 adaptations of his work a year. Well, I have some good news for you if that’s you. One of the author’s more recent works, Joyland is set to get the TV treatment over at the Disney-owned Freeform Network, TheWrap is reporting.

The story follows a college kid who works at an amusement park over the summer, “where he confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child and the way both will change his life forever.” It’s typical Stephen King fare, in other words.

“We are honored to be working with Stephen King – a master storyteller who understands the importance of culturally embedded tales that resonate with audiences on a deeply personal level,” said Karey Burke, executive vice president, Programming and Development at Freeform. “We can’t wait for Joyland to become part of Freeform’s offerings and haunt our viewers as only Stephen can.”

Given that this is a network aimed at the college-aged demographic and older, I’m curious as to how dark they’d allow things to get. Obviously, college students are plenty old to handle it, but with it being Disney-owned, will they pull back to make it more palatable? As someone who hasn’t read the novel, it’s hard to say.
