Earlier this year, it was revealed that Barack and Michelle Obama were venturing into the world of filmmaking. It was revealed that the pair were partnering with Netflix for a multi-year deal to produce movies and TV shows for the streaming service. This would include both scripted and unscripted shows, docu-series, documentaries, and feature films. In short, the sky was the limit!

But, at the time, there was no indication as to what kind of content we’d be getting for them. Now, we have news regarding one new project they’re taking on. According to a report from Deadline, the duo has acquired The Fifth Risk, written by author Michael Lewis. The goal with this Netflix series would be to help people understand how government works.

The book itself covers the transition between Obama and Trump, and how things fell through the cracks in that period. It also delves into how uninformed Trump’s appointees were when entering their positions, and that his appointees were even few and far in between. Here is an excerpt from the book’s synopsis:

“Michael Lewis’s brilliant narrative takes us into the engine rooms of a government under attack by its own leaders. In Agriculture the funding of vital programs like food stamps and school lunches is being slashed. The Commerce Department may not have enough staff to conduct the 2020 Census properly. Over at Energy, where international nuclear risk is managed, it’s not clear there will be enough inspectors to track and locate black market uranium before terrorists do.”

Lewis’ previous book, The Big Short, was also adapted a few years back — in the form of an Adam McKay directed narrative that followed the housing market crash of 2008.

This series was expected to be announced tomorrow on Katie Couric’s podcast, but it looks like the outlet has stolen her thunder.
