Stranger Things Instagram Teaser Features An Homage To A Deceased Character

With less than ten days until Netflix releases season three of Stranger Things, both Netflix and the show’s respective social media accounts are counting down the days with teaser postings. Just last Thursday, the final trailer was released—marking two weeks until the premiere. Early Monday morning, the show’s official Instagram account had another teaser for its followers, and it references a specific deceased character.

Showing what appears to be a darkly lit kitchen, the camera angle tilts toward the front of a refrigerator. Held to the door with a magnet is a drawing of Bob Newby, decked out in a button-up, slacks, tie, and red cape, with his arms extended like Superman. Bob Newby was of course played by Sean Astin (The Goonies, Rudy, The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy), who was the love interest of Winona Ryder’s Joyce Byers in season two. Dewby eventually met his end at the hands of the “Demi-dogs” in an attempt to rescue the show’s young main characters. At the end of the clip, a rumbling causes the drawing and everything else held by magnets to come sliding to the ground and out of view.

The marketing behind Stranger Things has always been a creative and entertaining production by Netflix. Before the premiere of season two, the streaming service released an exquisitely-edited eerie and thrilling trailer featuring the music and Vincent Price narration of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” (season two premiered the weekend before Halloween). Earlier this summer, the full season three trailer used The Who’s “Baba O’Riley (Teenage Wasteland),” displaying what seems to be a season that will feature our main characters growing further into their teenage years, and potentially placing a strain on their friendships. In just over a week, we’ll all know exactly what is in store for the kids from Hawkins.

The third season of Stranger Things premieres Thursday, July 4th, on Netflix.
