Study Shows Audiences Want Disney Remakes To Skew Closer To Original, Even If Controversial

I think we all love Disney for the most part. Many of us grew up with Disney being a huge part of our childhood, and for some of us, it continues into our adult lives. Though today, some of those classic animated films are considered problematic by some today — or at least parts of the films are. Given that we are living in a world where we get a live-action remake lobbed at us every five seconds, this could be potentially problematic. Assuming Disney is faced with this issue, should they fix it or stay true to the original?

A recent poll conducted by Morning Consult shows that around 55 percent of adults would rather have a remake closer to the original, even if that means including material that may be racist, sexist, or stereotypical. You can check out the stats below.

Those numbers may surprise some folks. All demographics are up over the halfway mark except two, and they’re still really close. While I think some changes should be made, such as the casting for Aladdin. The story takes place in the Middle East, so it only makes sense actors with heritage from over there should be cast.

One of Disney’s more recent live-action remakes, Dumbo, excluded what is one of my favorite scenes from the animated original. Yes, it’s the crows. But the song they sing is fantastic, absolutely wonderful, even if the representation is stereotypical.

Point being, it is aspects like these in the Disney films that, based on that poll, most audiences would supposedly prefer the live-action films would skew closer to such scenes or characters rather than bring an ax to it.
