Super Smash Bros Ultimate: Minecraft Joins The Fray!

Super Smash Bros Ultimate x Minecraft.

The Super Smash Bros franchise has always been a series that celebrates video games. However, over the past few games, they’ve managed to extend that celebration far beyond Nintendo. We’ve seen characters like Solid Snake, Cloud Strife, Sonic, and countless others join the fight in more recent games beyond Melee. The ante has been upped in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, especially in the fight passes, which have largely included more third-party characters.

Yesterday, Nintendo teased that a new character reveal was set to be announced this morning. The announcement came, and much to the surprise of almost everyone, it was Minecraft! In addition to Steve, gamers can play as Alex, a zombie, and an Enderman. Like with the Dragon Quest characters, they look to be relative clones of one another. Check out the reveal trailer below!

In his explanation, Super Smash Bros Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai explained the challenge of adding in Minecraft. Not only did he need to come up with unique move sets for the characters, but he needed to rework existing stages so they can add blocks to them. After all, Minecraft is nothing without the ability to lay down blocks, right?

While they did show off a lot of great ways the characters could be utilized, fans were left with a hell of a lot of questions. Well, Sakurai won’t be letting things lie. This Saturday on October 3 at 7:30 am PT, he will have another special event where he’ll go into great detail. It’s there we expect all questions to be answered.

This is super cool to see happen. The Minecraft characters are wholly unique, and the fact that they’re bringing them to Super Smash Bros Ultimate can only help further drive sales. After all, Minecraft is the single best-selling game of all time. It also further shows how buddy-buddy Nintendo and Microsoft are. This may be a bit out of left field, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Big N was privy to specific Bethesda projects in the future.
