Supergirl Unexpectedly To End With Upcoming Sixth Season On CW

Back in 2015, CBS debuted their own DC property after the success of Arrow and The Flash. Supergirl led by the wonderful Melisse Benoist. While they tried to keep her to themselves, she eventually crossed over to The CW for a second season and beyond. This series was also where the CW’s version of the Man of Steel made his debut. This relevant of course because of the new CW series, Superman and Lois set to premiere next year.

Unfortunately today we are here to deliver bad news about Superman’s cousin. Supergirl will be concluding with its upcoming sixth season. This announcement was made by The CW and producers Warner Bros TV and Berlanti Productions. This will be the second series from the Arrowverse to wrap up after Arrow’s eight seasons.

We know that the production on all the 2020-2021 series was delayed because of the pandemic. Supergirl had to deal with an additional challenge that may have delayed them anyway. They found themselves needed to work around the pregnancy of Benoist. According to Deadline, the series is looking to start production next week if permitted.

There are a number of possible reasons why they came to the decision to end the series. Between delays and downward ratings, they are reporting that everyone involved with the series including the producers, the studio, the network, and even Supergirl herself Benoist, decided that it would be best if they just wrapped it up this season. But not just a typical season, but an expanded 20 episode final season. This is expected to be longer than any of the other series The CW is launching.

Below is a heartfelt message from Benoist confirming the final season. Check it out!

To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless. She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful. I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season. ♥️ el mayarah 💪 @supergirlcw

While not perfect, Supergirl has been a great series. To me at least it never felt like it was missing Superman. I am very happy to see that Benoist was able to make the character her own. I also liked that it never felt like it was shoving any specific agendas at us. Their ideals flowed well with the specific storyline. Most of all I am glad that I got to share this series with my daughter who enjoyed it from day one.  We’ll keep you updated on the plans for the final season!

What do you think about the news? Are you sad to see Supergirl coming to an end?
