Taika Waititi Asked Natalie Portman About Star Wars Almost Recreating A SNL Skit

Thor: Love And Thunder - Deleted Scenes, Emotional Comedy And Crazy Four Hour Cuts Waititi

Taika Waititi has been making the rounds promoting the upcoming film Thor: Love and Thunder. This is the second film in the Thor franchise he was able to helm and he was even able to get Natalie Portman to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Well, he might be able to get the actress to return to Star Wars even if it is by accident.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Waititi revealed the moment when he asked Natalie Portman if she was interested in joining his upcoming Star Wars project.

“Natalie said to me, ‘What do you do next?’” he explained. “And I said ‘I’m trying to work on a Star Wars thing. Have you ever wanted to be in a Star Wars movie?’ She said, ‘I’ve been in Star Wars movies.’ I forgot about those ones. [Laughs]”

This moment is very similar to the classic Natalie’s Rap 2 SNL Skit (specifically 1:30) back in 2018.

Little is known about Waititi’s Star Wars project as he has played very coy about the development.   The project was announced in 2020 during a special Disney Investor Day presentation.  Recently Waititi has stated that he doesn’t even know if the project will be made.  If you have paid attention to recent Star Wars history he might actually be right.

“I’m trying to write the ‘Star Wars’ idea at the moment,” he said. “I’ve got to see how that goes, because once I submit it, that might determine when it gets made or if it gets made, even.”

The film will be the first Star Wars film since The Rise of Skywalker. It is expected to appear in theaters sometime in 2023, but don’t hold that as a concrete date. When the head of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, was asked recently her response was

“Yeah. Well, not 2023, but late 2023, we haven’t locked anything in.”
