Taiki Waititi Explains Why It’s Too Early To Say If Jane Will Have Cancer In Thor: Love And Thunder

Thor: Ragnarok was like a breath of fresh air for the Thor franchise when it hit, for me at least. I find the film to be one of the most re-watchable of all the MCU movies. So when we found out director Taiki Waititi was back for Thor: Love and Thunder, I was instantly hyped.

The fourth Thor movie is not due for release until November, 2021, so we don’t know a whole lot yet. We know that Jane Foster is back, (Natalie Portman) and that she will indeed take on the mantle of Thor at some point. We also know that Hemsworth is back and alongside Thor and Jane are Valkyrie, Korg, and Meek, all back from Ragnarok.

Furthermore, there has been some talk of whether this movie will cover the ‘Jane Foster having cancer’ storyline from the comics. We assume this would act as a catalyst for how she becomes Thor, but so far, everyone seems unsure if that angle will remain. Taiki Waititi himself said that while this is in early drafts, he admits it might not survive into the movie itself. The director (currently riding high on Jojo Rabbit‘s Oscar win) spoke with Variety recently about Thor: Love and Thunder.

“We don’t know? That comics run was a big inspiration, and was an influence on the first few drafts. But at Marvel, we always change everything. I could say one thing right now, and in two years, it will be the complete opposite — or that thing won’t exist. We continue writing even in post-production.”

When he was asked if that’s based on what Marvel wants, Waititi replied:

“Based on what the audience wants. We test the film. We shot for two weeks on Thor: Ragnarok with our pickups. There were huge, huge character changes, huge story changes. We reshot entire scenes. I think that’s why they do good work. They’re relentless in their pursuit of just a good movie.”

This is one aspect of Marvel Studios movies that isn’t always copied by other studios. Even Lucasfilm has not yet developed a habit of testing their movies as Marvel does. This testing, however, is what allows Marvel to continue to make changes to movies right up until release date. Kevin Feige has himself spoke of their process, how they schedule reshoots for every movie right at the start. Marvel knows that after testing and putting the film together, there are always new takes and new scenes they want to shoot.

Whether the Cancer storyline remains will depend on how test audiences react to it within the movie. That appears to be the very honest message that Waititi is giving us. With the success Marvel Studios has had with this process, it’s hard to second guess them. To conclude, it seems whether Jane Foster has Cancer in Thor: Love and Thunder or not, may not have an answer for some time.

Do you think this part of the comic books should be brought over in the movie side, what do you think of Marvel’s testing formula? Leave us your thoughts in the usual spot below.
