Terminator: Dark Fate – Director Tim Miller Describes The New Cyborgs Locking Horns In The Movie

The Terminator franchise isn’t in a great place right now, or is it? Previous entries have brought a series of diminishing returns both financially and critically, but with the rights to Terminator moving back to James Cameron and him exec-producing a new picture that ignores all the movies after Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Could Terminator: Dark Fate get the franchise back where it used to be?

Terminator: Dark Fate is being helmed by Tim Miller rather than Cameron who is busy making the Avatar sequels, and the director caught up with EW recently and opened up a little on what the deal is with the bad Terminator played by Gabriel Luna and what appears to be a good Terminator played by Mackenzie Davis.

“There’s this new future because of what Sarah did at the end of Terminator 2, and it’s worse than ever,” reveals Miller. “And that gives us the opportunity for these new characters. Gabriel comes from something that is not Skynet, but it’s like Skynet. And Mackenzie comes from something that Kyle Reese and the Resistance did. I tried to keep Gabriel a bit grounded while still interesting; I feel his new weapons and abilities are right for our times but not so ridiculous that it just turns into a visual effects superfest. And the same with Mackenzie’s character — I really liked her origin story. We did an early writer’s room and Joe Abercrombie came up with her as this super soldier from the future, but it comes at a cost to be one of these people. They’re the first people to die, they’re the shock troops who protect the rest of humanity, and her readiness to sacrifice is a really interesting way to come at a character.”

See, I already like this idea better based on this description. The previous sequels made Terminator 2 feel like a complete waste of time, whereas this idea changes the history of the future but still sends mankind hurtling towards a war with the AI they create. This time though, things are going to be different as those in the know, have been able to prepare accordingly.

One assumes that his absence so far from the trailers or promotion means that John Connor is no longer humanity’s saviour, instead the target appears to be the girl that’s being defended by Davis and the returning Linda Hamilton this time around. And if anything Gabriel Luna’s Rev-9 Terminator appears to be even deadlier than Grace (Davis character) or the previous T-100 from Terminator 2.

I wouldn’t say I’m super excited by this movie, but I am considering seeing it in theaters which is the first time since T2 that I have considered doing so. What do you think of the new Terminator descriptions, are you excited again for Terminator or still not fussed? Sound off as always below if you want to.
