That Time Sam Raimi Name-Dropped Doctor Strange In Spider-Man 2

Last night, the internet lit up with the news that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had a brand-new director in talks. As was widely publicized just a month or so ago, director Scott Derrickson, who helmed the first film, dropped out due to creative differences, leaving a gaping hole in the project. Though the hole itself apparently wasn’t that gaping, as I know props and art assets were still being created. The assumption of many on-the-ground workers was that Marvel Studios likely at least had someone in mind.

Oh, little did we know who they had in mind. Our own Nick Doll was the lone voice out there calling for Spider-Man’s Sam Raimi to take on direction of the film, as his experience with both comic book and horror made him a perfect contender. But, in case you forgot, Raimi let his love for the Sorcerer Supreme show for a brief moment way back in Spider-Man 2.

In the scene in question, the amazing J. Jonah Jameson is standing at his office window, brainstorming with his assistant on the best name ideas for Doc Ock. One of the names posited is none other than Doctor Strange.

“That’s pretty good,” Jameson says. “But it’s taken.”

I can vividly remember seeing this in theaters and hearing some members of the audience gasping. At the time, I wasn’t familiar with Doctor Strange as a character, but even I knew that it was Raimi throwing in a fun Marvel Easter egg.

And now, with Raimi in talks to direct the Marvel Studios flick, it’s as if a piece of destiny has been fulfilled. At least that’s how we like to look at it, because we’re a bunch of freakin’ nerds.
