Last year saw the release of the mid-budget crime thriller, The Accountant. The film starred Ben Affleck as an autistic accountant who works for some of the grimiest people in the underworld. However, this accountant does more than just manipulate numbers. This dude can kick some real ass. The film wasn’t too well received by critics, but action fans seemed to get a real kick out of it, and when all said and done, it made more than enough to justify its budget.
Now it sounds like that was all the film really needed to be in order to get a sequel. According to Deadline, the accountant will be returning to the big screen with a sequel, and not only is Ben Affleck in talks to return, but so is the screenwriter Bill Dubuque and director Gavin O’Connor.
The outlet continues, stating that they are currently working out the treatment for the film, and that it is set to include Jon Bernthal’s character — though for some reason, the report doesn’t mention anything about Bernthal being in talks for this film. Perhaps they’ll go to him once the others have been locked down. After all, there’s no point in going forward if the main players aren’t going.
Given that this movie made a decent amount of coin on its small budget, and it seems to be following the recent trend of Hollywood rediscovering that putting out a less risky film can still reap a decent amount of benefits. We saw this trend with John Wick, and it looks like we’ll be seeing more and more of it as time goes on.
Let’s just hope they’re able to make sure these films are good. As films like The Mummy have proven, audiences are having less and less tolerance for subpar films.
