The Batman: Matt Reeves Explains How Gotham Residents View The Caped Crusader

Is Robert Pattinson's Batman in The Penguin series? No idea, but DC boss James Gunn confirms there are no rights issues preventing it.

The Batman teaser trailer has certainly given us a lot to speculate over. How do Gotham residents view Batman in The Batman? Is Batman seen as a hero, a criminal, or something else. We know that this version of Batman has been going for around two years at this point in time. At the DC FanDome Event this Saturday, director Matt Reeves explained how this Batman is currently perceived by Gotham City.

“I mean if you were in a city, and there was a guy who dressed up as a bat and showed up out of the shadows and sometimes confronted those people and beat them up because he felt like they were doing was wrong — that he could sort of put the fear of God in them about the crimes that they’re committing — I think we would wonder well gee that, that guy sounds a little dangerous. The vision of the character that he becomes where he becomes a symbol of hope for the city, he’s early in the trajectory and so they’re afraid of him.”

Reeves did go on to explain that the perception of Batman is slowly starting to drift towards the symbol of hope he will become in Gotham.

“He’s kind of a growing legend and I think there are some people are wondering, ‘Does he exist?’ and that legend is building day by day and has been since he made his first appearance, about a year and a half ago is we’re in your too, so, so yeah the public is afraid of him. I mean, that’s one of the things I think that he will confront in the course of the story and that Rob has to sort of deal with in playing the character which is the idea of how he’s perceived as.”

This tracks with an early version of Batman. Comparing to Nolan’s movies, probably isn’t fair, but I’m going to do it anyway. I feel unlike Batman Begins, this would be more like how Batman is viewed in The Dark Knight? However who knows. We can definitely see Batman showing up at a crime scene and not being immediately arrested. We also saw footage of Police officers attempting to restrain Batman at one point. However, those shots didn’t give me the impression the Police were dealing with a criminal. Instead it feels more like preventing him from doing something that would be criminal? Again, just a guess form the footage we were shown and comments Reeves made.
