Any father that brings a family on an oil rig for a family as a fun activity will not win the “father of the year” award. Especially if the oil rig is surrounded by a gigantic vengeful shark hellbent on eating everyone in The Black Demon.
From director Adrian Grunberg (Rambo: Last Blood, Get the Gringo), The Black Demon retells the tale of a Mexican legend of a ferocious, mysterious creature of the sea.
The film stars Josh Lucas (Ford v Ferrari, Sweet Home Alabama), Julio Cesar Cedillo (Cowboys & Aliens, Sicario), and Fernanda Urrejola (Cry Macho, Narcos: Mexico). Grunberg directed the movie from the screenplay by Carlos Cisco and Boise Esquerra.
Here is the official synopsis:
Oilman Paul Sturges’ (Lucas) idyllic family vacation turns into a nightmare when they encounter a ferocious megalodon shark that will stop at nothing to protect its territory. Stranded and under constant attack, Paul and his family must somehow find a way to get his family back to shore alive before it strikes again in this epic battle between humans and nature.

Since Jaws, shark movies have undergone a drastic transformation from going bigger like Meg to the ridiculous with Sharkanado. A regular shark movie attack is losing its luster with audiences. For The Black Demon, it is going with the bigger is better.
There’s nothing wrong with that. It does sound like the film tries to tie it to Tlaloc, an Aztec god. But we’ll see.
The Black Demon is in theaters on April 28.
