The Boys spinoff is on the way.

The Amazon Prime original series The Boys has become something of a juggernaut. I’ll admit, I was surprised last year when it premiered. Based on the trailers, I’d expected it to be a bit of a mixed bag. But no. Everyone loves The Boys, and for good reason. It’s the perfect deconstruction of the superhero genre, and that’s in an era where deconstruction is fairly pervasive. It seems like The Boys is going to be around for a while, but that hasn’t stopped Amazon from capitalizing wholesale on the darn thing.

Yesterday, Variety reported that The Boys would likely be getting a spinoff. According to the outlet, Amazon Prime Video is fast-tracking a series that will follow a college run by Vought International. You guessed it. We’d be getting superheroes in college. And, before you ask, yes, it’ll be R-rated in nature — as if The Boys could be anything else.

“It is described as an irreverent, R-rated series that explores the lives of hormonal, competitive supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities. Part college show, part Hunger Games — with all the heart, satire and raunch of The Boys,” the outlet describes the series.

Craig Rosenberg will be the showrunner, and he will also be writing the pilot. Given his involvement as writer and executive producer of The Boys, it’s a natural thing for him to be leading a spinoff. 

I can imagine this show being a sort of raunchier and more violent version of something like My Hero Academia. However, whereas everyone there is pretty altruistic with their motivations, I’d imagine there’s an extra edge of cynicism we’d be getting with this Boys spinoff. There’s a lot of potential there, and a way to continue deconstructing the genre, but in a different fashion.
