The Budget For The Mandalorian May Shock You

It often seems that you have to spend money in order to make money. There are both political and economic debates to be had with that statement, but when it comes to Hollywood, it’s… well debatable too. Horror movies make relative bank due to low budgets and high returns. The Conjuring universe of films is proof of that. However, certain properties eat up a budget through special effects, and without said special effects, would not be considered worth seeing. Does Star Wars fall into that category? Well, it does now.

The Original Star Wars, also known as A New Hope, was an independent film made on a tiny budget of $11 million dollars which would still be considered a tiny budget with inflation at $46 million. That budget greatly grew as each new movie hit, allegedly topping out with Solo: A Star Wars Story due to extensive reshoots.

Now we’re about to enter the age of live-action Star Wars series like The Mandalorian and we have an idea of the cost. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the Disney+ series will cost $15 million per episode. Now, it has been rumored that the show will be eight episodes in length for a feature-length similar cost of $120 million. To put that in perspective the first six Star Wars films all cost less than $120 million to make.

This means we should get some high-quality effects for the upcoming series. Given the smaller scope and known practical effects of the show, I wonder how much was spent on costumes and explosions. This budget does give me the confidence that we’re in for a treat and with the announcement that a second season is already being considered, we may be looking at the best Disney Star Wars property since Rogue One.
