The Defenders Final Trailer: Don’t Call Them A Team

We are currently less than a week from the release of The Defenders. This is something that’s been a long time coming in the Marvel and Netflix world, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. This whole thing got kicked off in early 2015 with Daredevil, a series that — for the first time since Blade — allowed Marvel to go full dark. This trend continued with the rape survivor story that was Jessica Jones, and the hip hop Western that was Luke Cage. While Iron Fist was an enjoyable run, it was unquestionably the weakest of the bunch.

Though, regardless of where you stand in terms of Iron Fist, it’s still pretty damn exciting to see these four supers join forces to take on a much bigger threat in New York City. From the reluctant Luke Cage, to the guilt-ridden Daredevil, they each have a reason for protecting the city that they call home.

The latest trailer almost plays out like an extended scene for the first half or so, with us following up with the gang as they refuel at the Royal Dragon Chinese Restaurant. In it, we get to see Danny Rand be wide-eyed and bushy-tailed (which is something that was rarely allowed in his own series). From there, we get into a sizzle reel of action, plus a shot showing Jessica’s annoyance with being the only one who doesn’t know martial arts. We get to hear Luke Cage tell Danny to “light it up,” and hear him “defend” the idea of a group of supers to Sigourney Weaver. My main takeaway here is that it really seems poised to thrust Luke Cage into the spotlight as the leader of the gang, which is about perfect, as he’s the closest one to being the Captain American of the group.

Below is the official synopsis for the series:

“Blind ninja. Smart-ass detective. Bulletproof ex-con. Kung Fu billionaire. Marvel’s The Defenders centers on four outsider heroes that have to put aside their personal issues and come together when a villainous sect threatens to destroy New York City as we know it. The Netflix original series launches globally on August 18, 2017.”
